Description

Char Siu Chicken is a flavorful, tender dish made by marinating chicken in a sweet and savory Chinese BBQ sauce, then roasting it until golden brown. This dish offers a delightful balance of sweet, salty, and umami flavors. Perfect for a delicious weeknight dinner or served with rice for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or Shaoxing wine

  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • Red food coloring (optional, for traditional look)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine, oyster sauce, sugar, five-spice powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, sesame oil, and red food coloring (if using). Stir well until the sugar is dissolved and the marinade is smooth.

  2. Marinate the Chicken: Place the chicken pieces in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, making sure it is fully coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight for maximum flavor.

  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  4. Bake the Chicken: Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup. Place the marinated chicken on the baking sheet, discarding any excess marinade. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C) and is slightly caramelized.

  5. Optional Glaze: For extra glaze, brush the chicken with additional marinade halfway through cooking and again during the final 5 minutes of roasting.

  6. Serve: Slice the chicken and serve with steamed rice, vegetables, or in a sandwich.

Notes

  • If you prefer a more intense charred flavor, broil the chicken for the last 2-3 minutes.

  • This recipe can also be made with pork or beef for traditional Char Siu.

  • Adjust the sugar and hoisin sauce to taste if you prefer a sweeter or more savory flavor.
