Perfect for fall, this jam is ideal for spreading on toast, adding to pastries, or even gifting to friends and family during the holidays. It’s the perfect blend of fruity and caramel goodness!
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups peeled and chopped apples (Granny Smith or Fuji work well)
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 packet fruit pectin (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the chopped apples, sugar, brown sugar, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften (about 10-15 minutes).
- Add the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir until the butter is melted and the spices are well incorporated.
- If using fruit pectin, add it at this point and follow the packet instructions for use.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cook for about 30-40 minutes, stirring often, until the mixture thickens to a jam-like consistency. If it’s not thickening enough, you can increase the heat slightly and continue cooking.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Remove from heat and let the jam cool slightly before transferring it to sterilized jars.
- Seal the jars and refrigerate. The jam will keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
Notes
- If you prefer a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the mixture before canning.
- For added flavor, you can also add a touch of caramel extract along with the vanilla extract.
- If you want to can the jam for longer storage, you’ll need to process the jars in a water bath.
