Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water (slurry)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, tomato sauce (or ketchup), egg, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix until well combined, then divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape them into oval patties.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and browned.
- Pour in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly add the slurry to the skillet while stirring, and let the sauce thicken for another 2-3 minutes.
- Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spoon some of the gravy over them, and simmer for 3-4 more minutes to warm the steaks through and let the flavors meld.
- Serve hot, with mashed potatoes or rice, and enjoy!
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy for a richer texture.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can increase the cornstarch slurry slightly.
- This recipe can be made in advance and reheated for an easy weeknight dinner.
