Ingredients
Scale
- For the donuts:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 teaspoon lemon juice)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
- For the cream cheese glaze:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (adjust for desired consistency)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan or spray it with non-stick spray.
- Make the Donut Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this could result in dense donuts.
- Fill the Donut Pan:
- Spoon or pipe the donut batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 of the way full.
- Smooth the tops with a spatula to ensure even baking.
- Bake the Donuts:
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.
- Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the Cream Cheese Glaze:
- In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. Add more milk if needed to reach a smooth, pourable consistency.
- If the glaze is too thick, gradually add more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Glaze the Donuts:
- Once the donuts are fully cooled, dip the tops of the donuts into the cream cheese glaze. Alternatively, you can drizzle the glaze over the donuts with a spoon.
- Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve:
- Serve these delicious Baked Red Velvet Donuts fresh with a cup of coffee or milk for a sweet treat!
Notes
- For extra decoration, you can sprinkle the donuts with red sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or even crushed nuts.
- If you don’t have a donut pan, you can bake the batter in a muffin tin and create red velvet “muffin donuts” instead.
- Make sure to not overmix the batter, as this can make the donuts dense.
