  • Author: Ellie
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

These Baked Red Velvet Donuts are the perfect blend of rich, velvety flavor and light, fluffy texture. Baked instead of fried, they’re a lighter option that doesn’t compromise on taste. With a creamy cream cheese glaze on top, these donuts are a sweet treat that’s perfect for any celebration, especially Valentine’s Day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the donuts:
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 teaspoon lemon juice)
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
    • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • For the cream cheese glaze:
    • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
    • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 12 tablespoons milk (adjust for desired consistency)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan or spray it with non-stick spray.
  • Make the Donut Batter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
    • In a separate bowl, beat the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until well combined.
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this could result in dense donuts.
  • Fill the Donut Pan:
    • Spoon or pipe the donut batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 of the way full.
    • Smooth the tops with a spatula to ensure even baking.
  • Bake the Donuts:
    • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.
    • Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare the Cream Cheese Glaze:
    • In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. Add more milk if needed to reach a smooth, pourable consistency.
    • If the glaze is too thick, gradually add more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Glaze the Donuts:
    • Once the donuts are fully cooled, dip the tops of the donuts into the cream cheese glaze. Alternatively, you can drizzle the glaze over the donuts with a spoon.
    • Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
  • Serve:
    • Serve these delicious Baked Red Velvet Donuts fresh with a cup of coffee or milk for a sweet treat!

Notes

  • For extra decoration, you can sprinkle the donuts with red sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or even crushed nuts.
  • If you don’t have a donut pan, you can bake the batter in a muffin tin and create red velvet “muffin donuts” instead.
  • Make sure to not overmix the batter, as this can make the donuts dense.
