  • Author: Ellie
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake combines savory ground beef, creamy sauce, and tender potatoes, all topped with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a one-pan, hearty dish perfect for a cozy family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 cups milk, divided

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.

  • Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the beef and stir to combine.

  • In a separate saucepan, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of milk and the flour. Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly until it thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  • Once thickened, stir in the remaining 1/2 cup of milk, and then pour the milk mixture over the ground beef in the skillet. Stir to combine and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.

  • In a greased 9×13 baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes, followed by the sliced onions. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

  • Pour the beef and milk mixture evenly over the potatoes and onions.

  • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.

  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add some chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme before baking.

  • If you want a thicker or thinner sauce, adjust the amount of milk to your liking.

  • This dish pairs well with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables.
